Since the beginning of time man has been headstrong and egotistical leading to struggles with other people. In Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," Montresor makes it known to the readers that his friend Fortunato has done wrong against him many times. Montresor decides that he has had enough and tricks the drunk Fortunato into following him into the catacombs. Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall and buries him alive. Based on his actions we can tell that Montresor is full of revenge because he plots to kill his own friend. The other difference noticed in the short stories, is that in both of the short stories the aftermath of the murder is different.

The main character Montresor is seeking his revenge upon his old acquaintance Fortunato, and the piece does more than just punish. Poe is known for his morbid work but this outshines them all. The twisted story leaves many unanswered question for the reader's mind to come up with the answers. From the start of the short story The Cask of Amontillado the reader is exposed to the strange jealousy in the character Montresor. It is clear that Montresor is seriously unhappy, but he almost seems so annoyed that he is excited.

Although the volume of the story is very short, it is very peculiar to its language choice and form of narration. Edgar Allan Poe was an American short-story writer, essayist, and poet. Many of his works include themes of death, burials, and mourning; therefore, the writer is considered to be a representative of dark romanticism genre. The strong impact that the story makes on the reader is created with the help of irony.
The two main characters in the story are Montresor, who is the murderer, and Fortunato who plays a wine connoisseur and the victim. In this dark story, we can see a lot of irony, hate and revenge coming from the main character who has been planning this all along. In this essay I will analyze, examples of irony and foreshadowing used by the writer, symbols and themes, among other things.
